Acne Scars

"No One Loves Acne Scars...."

....Acne Scars?  It stands to reason that the best way to deal with acne is to get busy treating it as soon as it appears. That's you best chance to head off severe acne scarring. (See bottom of page)

But what if you already have some problem scarring from acne?  Well, there are a few things you can do about acne scars...

One treatment is laser skin resurfacing. Skin resurfacing should only be done by a doctor who specializes in laser treatment.  Especially one who regularly treats acne scars.

The laser therapy removes the damaged top layer of skin of acne scars and tightens the middle layer. That may not remove the acne scars, but it leaves skin smoother. Laser resurfacing can take anywhere from a few minutes to an hour.

It can be an uncomfortable procedure.  Doctors try to lessen any pain when treating acne scars by numbing the skin with local anesthesia.

After the laser treatment it takes between 3 and 10 days for the skin to completely heal.

Dermabrasion is another way to treat acne scarring,  The dermabrasion treatment uses a rotating wire brush or spinning diamond instrument to wear down the surface of the skin.

As the skin heals, a new, smoother layer replaces the skin of your scars. Healing takes from 10-days to 3-weeks.

Resurfacing and dermabrasion can only be done if you don't have an active case of acne.

If you have minor acne scarring doctors may recommend a mild chemical peel or Microdermabrasion. This can be done in the doctor's office.

For some extremely deep acne scars surgery may be the only answer.

If your acne has subsided and you have some mild scarring you may have luck with self treatment. Chances are that you will have to try a few remedies, but there are products that promise to diminish acne scars.
